What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a safe, scientific and effective therapy for conditions of the spine and body. It is a way of creating optimum spinal health without the use of drugs, so that the nervous system can do its job.
Chiropractic focuses on addressing the cause of the symptoms, rather than suppressing the symptoms that arise from the body telling you that is not in its optimum state.
What is the nervous system?
Your nervous system is the most important system in the body and chiropractic can directly impact its function. Your brain is like the master control unit, it sends messages down the spinal cord so the nerves tell the body what action it would like to carry out. Absolutely everything in your body is controlled by your nervous system which is why it is hugely important for it to function to its optimum.
Interference to the nervous system means the brain cannot communicate with the rest of the body effectively which results in pain or dysfunction of one or more of the bodies systems,
What causes the interference?
There are 24 bones in the spine with lots of joints that allow us to bend and twist. The nervous system needs these joints to function correctly to allow the brain to send its messages around the body. As with anything with lots of moving parts, there are lots of bits that could potentially go wrong. These joints often get stuck or become misaligned which results in faulty communication. For example, if there are areas of spinal dysfunction causing changes to the way the brain perceives what is going on in the knee, it could lead to the brain controlling the hip and knee muscles in a less than ideal way, causing hip and/or knee pain.
A chiropractor can detect areas of interference by examining the spine with their hands, using light pressure to feel for stuck or misaligned joints.
What is pain?
Pain is created by your brain when it thinks there is a potential risk of tissue damage. It is a warning sign and a very intelligent way of the body telling us that something isn’t right. Often, people present with pain, but it is just a symptom of spinal dysfunction like in the example above. Chiropractic focuses on getting to the root cause of the problem rather than simply treating the symptoms. Taking pain killers just masks the pain, it doesn’t resolve the underlying problem. In fact, it can worsen the problem because the brain is no longer aware that there is an issue so doesn’t alter the function accordingly.
How is chiropractic different?
Chiropractic uses specific spinal adjustments applied to areas of the spine where dysfunction has been identified. This removes the interference to the nervous system allowing the body to return to normal function. It takes time to train the spine to stay in the correct position so a course of care is needed which will include adjustments, postural advice and exercises tailored to each individual.
Chiropractic is a healthcare system, not a ‘sickcare’ system. It aims to improve the function of the spine and eliminate bad habits that contribute to spinal dysfunction to prevent the problem from reoccurring. Once optimum health has been achieved Chiropractors provide maintenance care to ensure the nervous system continues to function to its optimum. Like going to the dentist for a check-up, maintenance care aims to prevent problems before they arise. As they say, prevention is better than cure.
